Today, every student, regardless of his or her area of specialization, must have a solid foundation in the theory and principles of information technology. There are several reasons for this. First, in an information-based society, the primary output of organizational workers consists of information and knowledge. As the complexity and sophistication of managing businesses increase, global and international economic pressures mount, and technology becomes intricately woven into the fabric of business. So, knowledge of computers and information systems is becoming essential.
Bachelor of Science in the Computer Science and Information Technology (BSc. CSIT) has been developed with a motive to provide the students with adequate knowledge in theoretical, practical and technical aspects to meet the ever-growing manpower requirement in the field of Information Technology.
BSc. CSIT is a four-year (eight-semester) degree program offered by Institute of Science and Technology, Tribhuvan University. The program comprises of core computer courses, elective natural science and computer science courses, mathematics courses, and other supporting courses of 126 hours. In addition to the core computer science and several elective courses, the program offers several projects and internship. The program develops the underlying principles of both computer science and information technology including design, theory, programming and application of computer system and shows how these principles can be applied to solve real world problems.
After the completion of BSc. CSIT program of TU, the graduates have opportunities to build careers at different government and non-government institutions, software and computer networking companies, private and public organizations as IT experts and more industries wherever there is a need of computer science and information technology professionals. IT graduates can join in various job positions like researcher, software architect, system analyst, system administrator, software programmer, database administrator, network administrator, graphics designer, web designer, IT manager, IT security engineer, IT project manager, IT consultant etc. in Nepal as well as in abroad. The graduates can also start their career as IT entrepreneur or they can pursue higher academic degree in national or abroad universities around the world.
Recently, a new undergraduate degree course in the field of computer applications has been developed by faculty of Humanities and Social Science, Tribhuvan University. The course name is Bachelor of Art in Computer Application (BCA), which is a 4 years (8 semesters) degree that prepares students for a career in the field of computer applications and software development. The 126 credit hour program comprises of 71 credit hours of core computer application courses, 12 credit hours of elective courses, 9 credit hours of mathematics and statistics courses and 6 credit hour of language courses. In addition to the core computer science and several elective courses, the program also offers 13 credit hours of projects and internship. Apart from the conventional lecture classes, the course also provides the tutorials and lab classes which further helps the students in practical based learning. BCA graduates can start up their career in either private sector or government sector since there are a lot of employment opportunities in both these sectors. They graduates can apply for a post of system analysts, system managers, project managers, database administrators, system designers, software programmers, web developer, software developer etc. Well qualified graduates can find openings in Nepal or abroad easily or even can start their own ventures. They can also join the course like MIT, MBA, MCA, etc to pursue higher academic degree in national or abroad universities around the world.
Comparison
BSc. CSIT is a Tribhuvan University Course under Institute of Science and Technology and only science students who have secured minimum “C” grade in each subject of grade 11 and 12 are eligible for admission where as BCA is also a Tribhuvan University Course under Faculty of Humanities and Social Science and students from Science, Management and Humanities Faculty who have secured minimum “D+” grade in each subject of grade 11 and 12 are eligible for admission.
- BSc. CSIT is a combination of Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT). The computer science portion focuses on design and developing algorithm for real problem solving which includes research, theories, principles and technology where as the information technology portion focuses on the use of algorithms for real world problem solving which includes use of many software and the computer applications in daily life. BCA course is more focused on application and use of software and computer applications for real world problem solving.
- Considering the BSc.CSIT Course Structure, students need to do project work on seventh semester and internship in eight semester, where as in BCA Course Structure, students need to do project work on fourth, sixth and eighth semester and internship in seventh semester.
